This calendar features twelve colourful floral woodcuts made by renowned English artist, Mabel Royds (1874 – 1941). This beautiful selection of prints comes from the extensive collection at the National Galleries of Scotland.  Royds was an artist best known for mastery of the woodcut technique inspired by Japanese woodcuts. With her simple, daring line she captured the fantastical nature of flowers, ranging from magnolias to water lilies, daisies, tulips and many more. This is a truly stunning calendar to adorn your wall.

In 1911, Royds settled in Edinburgh where she taught at Edinburgh College of Art under the tutelage of Frank Morley Fletcher, whose influence she began making colour woodcuts. In 1913 she married the etcher Ernest Lumsden, who also taught at Edinburgh, and together they travelled through Europe, the Middle East and India.

This series of flower prints were made between 1933 and 1938, Royds always enjoyed depicting the simple, yet beautiful, things around her. In ‘Magnolia’ the artist has used the stems of the magnolia plant to create a lively image, despite the muted tones, that leads the eye around the composition.

In this calendar informative text accompanies each work and the date pad features previous and next month’s views.
